Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

The first visual symptoms of ageing are primarily shown in the face, in the most sensitive area around the eyes, which is very important with regard to aesthetics. The eyelids are a facial feature playing a significant role in facial movements, always in motion, no wonder the first requests for intended correction procedures are related to the eyelids both in men and women.

Eyelid surgery is performed as a separate procedure on the upper or lower lids or both at the same time. Eyelid surgery is considered when evaluating the age-related appearance of the entire face. Before the decision on surgery is made, the first and key step is a personal consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon.

The human eye is seated on fat granule cushions with fine capsules. As the years go by, these capsules lose their strength and the fat capsules begin to penetrate the eyelid’s subcutaneous layer, creating a fat prolapse and the circular eye muscle loses its strength. Excess skin appears sooner or later in the upper eyelids where the range of movement is much higher than in the lower eyelids. Please note that even plastic surgery of the lower eyelids cannot remove fine wrinkles located in the outer eye corner. These fine wrinkles occur as a result of habitual facial muscle movements and are virtually permanent.

One very important thing, which must not be ignored, is that the patients must avoid using drugs such as anticoagulants for one month before surgery! The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, a special sterile plaster can be applied to the sutures. The whole procedure takes approximately 40 min for the lower or upper eyelids and is completed by applying elastic compression dressings. After surgery, the patient can be released for outpatient care without dressings, only with dark glasses. Swellings and subcutaneous blood bruising are the usual post-op symptoms. The patient is recommended to observe a rest regime with careful application of cold compresses and elastic compression at night. The best time to exchange compresses is every three hours. The sutures are removed between days 5 and 6 after surgery. The patients can resume regular activities after one week, women can use their usual cosmetic products after 14 days. The surgical scars disappear from two weeks to two months after the surgery.
